Indoor Air Quality
---Filtration is part of indoor air quality. Traditional 1” air filters have provided only minimal air filtration. If changed regularly they can protect your equipment but do little to protect you. The more expensive ($7-$10) 1” filters will do a better job of cleaning the air but will fill up quickly so make sure you are changing them regularly or you may do harm to your equipment and lower your energy efficiency.
---We prefer a 4” media filter with a MERV 8 rating. In a typical home it will need to be changed once per year at about $34. It will do a good job of filtering out air particulates while allowing enough air flow to sufficiently supply the furnace efficiently. Yes, they are more expensive than 1” fiberglass filters but you will find them competitive with the annual cost of high performance 1” filters.
If you desire better air quality than a media filter provides we typically suggest UV bulb protection. UV treatment devices will kill air born bacteria and viruses as the air passes the light bulbs. Some dual bulb devices will also treat odors in the air. The light bulbs typically need to be replaced annually at an average cost of $75 each.
---Humidity is a huge component to air quality. In summer you will want to lower your humidity to be more comfortable and breathe easier. Air conditioners lower humidity as they cool the air. Some new air conditioners like Carrier’s Infinity Series have enhanced dehumidification feature when paired with an Infinity Series furnace. This allows you to lower the humidity level without dropping the temperature so low. It saves electricity and helps you feel more comfortable at higher temperature levels. No more cold, clammy meat locker feeling home.
In the winter some newer homes that were built very tightly have too much humidity. We can address this problem with an air to air exchanger. Many other homes have too little humidity. This results in static electricity, itchy noises and eyes, dry coughs and an uncomfortable feeling. Installing one of several different humidifiers will correct these problems, protect antiques, furniture and hardwood flooring as well as increase heating efficiency. With humidity at proper levels you will be more comfortable with the thermostat set a couple of degrees cooler.
---There are some newer humidifier technologies available. Typically we use by-pass type humidifiers but steam units are also available. Today’s units are available with outdoor temperature sensors to automatically adjust humidity levels as well as some water conserving features.
